Episode 59: Aikido and the art of creating a meeting

Jan-NeveliusIn this episode I´m delighted to be joined by Jan Nevelius from Sweden who is one of my favorite teachers in aikido. Nevelius started practicing martial arts when he was 11 and since then he has pursued a whole range of asian healing arts, such as reiki, qi gong, shiatsu and acupuncture. He is now a 6th dan instructor in Aikikai and trains under both Endo sensei and Christian Tissier sensei. His homebase is Vanadis Aikido Club in Stockholm, however he is often invited abroad to teach and hold seminars and in this conversation we explore some of the core themes that emerged during a seminar he held in Trondheim, Norway December 2012. In the beginning of our dialogue he shares his story of how he came into the martial arts, before giving a short introduction to aikido in general. We then delve into the notion of working with the third center while also linking this aikido principle to life outside the dojo (the place we train aikido). We also discuss how aikido can help to create good meetings between people and how it can foster a fertile ground for common understanding and healthy relationships. Regarding conflict we also draw some parallels between aikido practice and the ability to create interpersonal spaces that can hold the tensions that emerge when individuals hold opposing views and opinions. Towards the end Nevelius shares some of his plans for the year a head and I´m excited to learn that his first book will be published in September 2013! This episode is part of a series called “Konflikt som utviklingsvei” (The Way of Conflict).

If you feel inspired or provoked by our conversation feel free to add your comments after the interview. You can also send in a written piece of work and get it published together with this episode. Further details can be found here.
